Choosing the right measuring principle

In the mbar range, a conventional Bourdon tube gauge produces barely meaningful pointer deflections. A capsule element gauge, by contrast, displays even small pressures clearly and accurately. Here's how to find the right instrument.

How to select in four steps

1. Define measuring range
Vacuum (e.g. −160/0 mbar), fine range (0–40 mbar) or higher (up to 0–400 mbar)? The operating pressure should ideally fall within the middle third of the scale.
2. Determine connection position
1/4″ bottom (back-of-pipe) or 1/4″ rear (flush-front).
3. Check overload requirements
If pressure spikes are expected, an overload-resistant version is recommended (e.g. Series 5840 ff., 10× overload-proof; depending on variant).
4. Match medium & environment
Pay attention to the materials of the housing, measuring element and sight glass, as well as the permissible media/ambient temperature according to the data sheet.

What is a capsule gauge?

A capsule gauge is a mechanical pressure measuring instrument whose sensing element consists of a pressure-sensitive capsule. It deflects even at very low pressures, enabling a readable display in the mbar range – where Bourdon tube gauges are too insensitive.
